Former State Senator Nina Turner (D-OH) said Saturday on MSNBC that it is a “disgrace” to the United States of America that there has only been one African-American woman in the Senate, adding that at least the Republicans “did have some diversity.”
Turner said, “[T]he fact that we’ve only had one African-American woman in the Senate is a disgrace to this nation. And so, we have a lot of work to do, not just in lip service, but putting forth the requisite political effort and will to make that sure African-American women are in those spaces, in governors’ roles, in the federal Senate. This should not be a surprise, so that when it comes time to run for president — I mean, say what we want to about the Republicans, at least they did have some diversity.”
