Acting Secretary of the Army Patrick Murphy stated that when the US “walked away” from Iraq, “bad things happened and Americans were killed” “and that’s why we had to go back in” on Monday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
Murphy said, “I think the lesson learned was, when we walked away, bad things happened, and bad things happened and Americans were killed.”
He was then asked if he was referencing the US not backing up its “red line” in Syria, or Iraq. Murphy stated, “Well, I would say, with Iraq, and that’s why we had to go back in. And listen, it’s not about an American solution. It’s — and that’s why we’re being much more thoughtful, as we go in, to build this partner capability, to build the Iraqi forces, and also the Syrian forces, to go after, really the extremists in that area.”
