Tuesday in an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, a supporter of Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton’s White House bid, downplayed the importance of Clinton releasing transcripts of paid speeches she gave, which included one to Wall Street banking giant Goldman Sachs.
According to de Blasio, the speeches aren’t important and where learn the most about Clinton the candidate is in her platform.
“I’m looking you in the eye – it doesn’t matter,” de Blasio said. “Because the platform matters, not a speech given years ago. It just doesn’t matter.”
“Look the bottom line is – and I find this to be a bit of a contradiction, I’m going to call out my dear friends in the media – the platform is what you hold us to, the platform is what you all hold to. A lot of times, the legitimate concern is why won’t someone be definitive in their platform? Why do they hedge? Their platform is profoundly progressive. It calls for higher taxes on the wealthy, closing the carried interest loophole, it calls for the Buffett rule making sure millionaires and billionaires pay the same tax rate as their secretaries and their drivers, higher wages, higher benefits. To me this is the most progressive platform of anybody who could actually become president of the United States in a half century and that’s what we should focus on.”
