Monday on Fox News Channel’s “Outnumbered,” John McCain commented on Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton electing to leave his post-Super Bowl press conference Sunday after his team lost to the Denver Broncos 24-10.
McCain defended the 2015 NFL season MVP, saying he knows “what it’s like to lose” having lost a presidential election to President Barack Obama, but he does think Newton can bounce back from the Super Bowl loss.
“You can’t understate the importance of the Super Bowl to Americans and around the world. This is a very incredibly transcendent event,” McCain said. “All I can say is, I know what it’s like to lose. I know it is tough. Your first instinct is to kind of wallow in self-pity. I’m very good at that, but Meghan will attest to that. But I think, just remember, he’s very young and he has got a lot to learn. Let’s give him another chance because he is going to be back.”
He later quoted novelist Ernest Hemingway, saying, “The definition of courage is grace under pressure.”
“I’m sure next time, he’ll show a lot more grace,” McCain concluded.
