HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher wondered why the way women are treated in the Muslim world isn’t more of a cause for feminists during an interview with author and activist Gloria Steinem on Friday.

Maher asked, “Why aren’t the way women are treated in the Muslim world considered more of a feminist cause?” Steinem responded that it is a feminist cause, and that women in the Muslim world consider their treatment a feminist cause.

After she added, “All monotheism is a problem.” Maher responded, “Yes, but not quite as much.” Steinem then said that the problem is “Islam being attached to the government.” And all theocracies are a problem.

Maher then pointed to the “40 countries” with Sharia Law and how women are treated as a result of such law. Steinem responded that she doesn’t like any monotheism, and pointed to feminists in the Islamic world who are pushing back against radicalism using the words of Mohammed.
