Friday night, 23-year-old Joey Resto said he was on a New York subway when he spotted a homeless man in his car. The other passengers sat far away because of the stench surrounding the man.
Upon seeing the condition of the man, Resto was overcome with compassion. He removed his shirt and placed it on the shivering man and then placed his hat on the man’s bruised head.
“It was freezing that night. He looked cold and hungry,” Resto told Eyewitness News. “He looked so weak and frail. I had to help him, or he would not put it on.”
Resto was unaware his kind deed was being filmed by another passenger. The person who captured it uploaded it to Facebook and the video now has over 13 million views.
The mother of Resto’s girlfriend was pleasantly surprised when she recognized him in the video as it was beginning to go viral.
Resto said he hopes he inspires others to do acts of kindness. He also invited the homeless man to his apartment in Brooklyn for more clothes. He offered to get him something to eat, but he said the man curled up and went to sleep after being given the shirt and hat.
