Colin Cowherd reacted Monday on the Fox Sports 1 simulcast of “The Herd” to the report that Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred will uphold former Cincinnati Reds great Pete Rose’s ban for gambling.
He said Ty Cobb was a “racist” and is in the Hall of Fame, so he reasoned that the all-time hits leader should also be in the Hall of Fame. The way to fix the potential issues, he suggested, would be to add an asterisk to the controversial players.
“I’ve never looked at these overly ceremonial halls. What do they mean?” asked Cowherd. “He’s the all-time singles leader. Ty Cobb was a racist and he’s in it. He’s the all-time hit king. I don’t care that he bet. Listen, you can put an asterisk by him and say he bet. We’ve got guys that are going to end up in the Hall of Fame that did steroids, but to deny he’s a Hall of Famer — I grew up with Pete Rose. He was two singles a night. He’s a great player.”
