According to a report by ABC 13, police in Florida have determined that a burglar suspect was killed by an alligator while possibly on the run from police.
Matthew Riggins, 22, is suspected to have been committing a string of burglaries in Brevard County with an accomplice on November 12. Police spotted Riggins and the accomplice the next morning, but the two escaped on foot.
Police searching the area reported hearing yelling but were unable to determine the source that night. Ten days later, Riggins’ remains were found floating in Barefoot Bay lake.
Dive team members encountered an 11-foot alligator behaving aggressively while recovering the body. Authorities called in a trapper to capture the alligator, which they had euthanized.
After conducting a forensic examination, remains consistent with the injuries to Riggins showed inside the alligator’s stomach. Police believe Riggins was attacked by the 11-foot gator while hiding from authorities in the lake.
