According to a report from Minneapolis Star Tribune, a Minnesota high school football player is currently under investigation after he was caught on video gouging an opponent’s eye.
During the Class 1A Prep Bowl championship game between Minneapolis North High School and Minneota High School Saturday, Minneapolis North defender Antwan Cobble stuck two of his fingers in Minneota running back Isaac Hennen’s face mask, leaving Hennen visibly shaken up.
Hennen, who had already scored three touchdowns in the game, was able to return to action after suffering the injury.
No penalty was called on the play, but officials are reviewing it before handing out any sort of disciplinary action.
Minneapolis North coach Charles Adams commented on his player’s actions the day after, telling Star Tribune:
“I don’t teach kids to do that, to poke people in the eye. I don’t accept it or tolerate it. My players usually respond to things that are happening. It was chippy on both sides. … There were a million things that could’ve been caught on the field by either team.”
Minnesota coach Chad Johnston said his sophomore running back was not seriously injured and is only dealing with a sore eye. His team defeated Minneapolis North 35-18.
