In wake of the announcement of University of Missouri president Tim Wolfe stepping down after protests and demands from students and professors for his response to alleged racial incidents on campus, MSNBC had former Missouri Tiger football player Michael Sam on to give his reaction.
The now Canadian Football League player told host Thomas Roberts on Monday’s “MSNBC Live” that he hopes the protests by Missouri football players does not affect any of their NFL futures, comparing it to his coming out as homosexual. He said there is more to life than football and people standing up for what they believe in is “important.”
“Football is not everything. When I came out, I didn’t do it for the fame or the glory. I did it because I was tired of hiding. And people who stand up for what they believe, that’s important. Life is important. Football isn’t everything. Hopefully it doesn’t harm the players or the careers and the league,” he stated. “I just hope it doesn’t do anything to harm their chances to make the NFL roster.”
