Spurrier: ‘I’m Resigning,’ ‘Not Retiring’

Late on Monday, it was reported that University of South Carolina Gamecocks football coach Steve Spurrier would be retiring immediately.

During the press conference Tuesday, the “head ball coach” left open the idea that he could still coach or work for a football team in some fashion, even saying he could coach high school football.

“First of all, I’m resigning and not retiring,” Spurrier said Tuesday. “I doubt if I’ll ever be a head coach again, maybe coaching a high school team or something but don’t say I’ve retired completely. Who knows what will come in the future?”

The legendary coach ends his career with an 86-49 record at South Carolina and a 228-89-2 mark in 25 seasons as a head coach in the NCAA. He coached Florida, his alma mater, from 1990 to 2001 and led the Gators to the 1996 national championship and six SEC championships.
