PTI’s Mike Wilbon: ‘Gutless Move’ by MLB to Not Hear Dodgers 2B Chase Utley’s Appeal of Suspension Immediately

On Monday’s “Pardon the Interruption” on ESPN, co-host Mike Wilbon reacted to Major League Baseball’s handling of Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley’s suspension and appeal from his part in a slide over the weekend against the New York Mets deemed dirty by MLB, who suspended Utley for two games.

Utley appealed the two-game suspension, but the case cannot be heard immediately, therefore Utley can play until his appeal is heard.

The ESPN co-host called MLB “gutless” and accused the league of “having no spine” for not hearing Utley’s appeal before the Monday game, saying MLB does not want to suspend a player from a postseason game.

“This is an unbelievably gutless move by Major League Baseball. To say, ‘We don’t of your approve of your slide and we want to punish you, we don’t have the guts to take you out of postseason games from this office, so therefore we’re going to try to play both ends.’ It’s an unbelievably gutless move. If you think what he did is illegal or harmful or done intentionally, then make a stand. I mean, talk about having it both ways and having no spine, that is what has happened here to me.”
