Ana Marie Cox: Planned Parenthood Defunding ‘Crass Level’ ‘Showmanship’

While speaking on MSNBC’s “Up with Steve Kornacki” on Saturday, columnist for The Guardian and The Daily Beast Ana Marie Cox reacted to the GOP’s threat to defund Planned Parenthood, calling it “showmanship.”

Cox explained that federal money is not used for actually performing abortions, but that this is “really showmanship at a crass level” by the GOP.

“There is no federal money that goes towards performing abortions. There are laws in various states and federal laws so Planned Parenthood doesn’t use any of the money it gets to perform abortions. This is really showmanship at its most crass level. If you get people talking about Planned Parenthood, you’re going to get some people reminding them what an important part it’s played in their lives. For a lot of women, Planned Parenthood and other publicly funded family planning centers, that is their primary health care.”

“I don’t think this is going to work out well for them,” she concluded.
