NYU School of Law professor Alina Das commented on the illegal immigration issue, which 2016 GOP primary candidate Donald Trump has targeted as a major issue in the United States.
Although Trump catches the most flak for speaking out on illegal immigration, Das noted that both Republicans and Democrats are “demonizing” immigrants.
“They really need to come out strongly against this kind of rhetoric, and we see it from both parties. Both parties are now taking some subset of immigrants and demonizing them. The Republicans are demonizing the larger group, to be sure, but the Democrats are doing it, too. They use labels like ‘criminal aliens’ and other kinds of fear mongering words in order to justify policies of mass deportation and mass detention.”
