Harris-Perry: Hurricane Katrina Impact Would Have Been Different if Victims Were More Racially Diverse

Continuing the Fair Housing Act riff, Melissa Harris-Perry spoke on her MSNBC show on Saturday about how history would be different if the Fair Housing Act had been better enforced.

Harris-Perry, on top of saying that the Fair Housing Act would better protect the black communities from gangs, asthma rates and predatory lending, suggested that Hurricane Katrina would have been better had those affected been more racially diverse.

“How different would our country if the government had taken its responsibilities seriously all those years ago? If Hurricane Katrina had struck a New Orleans where poor African-Americans weren’t relegated to low-lying neighborhoods that are most vulnerable to flooding. If those faces on those rooftops had been a multi-racial, economically diverse cross section of the city.”
