Amid NASCAR releasing a statement asking fans to refrain from flying the Confederate flag at events, ESPN NASCAR analyst and former driver Ricky Craven was asked about his thoughts of the flag being flown at NASCAR events.

Craven stated that he does not understand why there is a need to fly the Confederate flag at the racetrack, and suggested instead that fans fly the flags of their favorite drivers.

“I truly do not understand why they feel the need to fly a Confederate flag at a racetrack. Why can’t you spend your money on a Jeff Gordon flag? Kevin Harvick flag? Jimmie Johnson flag? At a racetrack, show your allegiances to those drivers. That makes sense to me. I wasn’t born in the Deep South, maybe that’s the difference.”
