ESPN sportswriter Mike Wise responded to South Carolina State Sen. Paul Thurmond (R), son of the late Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC), calling for the removal of the Confederate flag.
Wise proposed that if a symbol makes someone feel worse than it makes the person using it feel good, then just out of decency, it should be removed.
“I think it comes down to something as simple as this; if a symbol, whether it’s the Washington football team’s name or logo, or the Confederate flag, if a symbol makes one person feel worse, than it makes you feel good, why wouldn’t you get rid of it out of basic decency? I see no reason why not.”
