Boston Globe’s Ryan: Scherzer Lost Perfect Game on ‘Real Bush League’ Play

Boston Globe columnist and frequent panelist on ESPN’s “Around the Horn” Bob Ryan spoke on Sunday’s “Sports Reporters” on ESPN about Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer losing his perfect game in the top of the ninth inning with two outs when he plunked Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Jose Tabata, who appeared to put his arm in the way of an inside pitch.

An upset Ryan stated that Tabata sticking his arm in the way of the ball is a “real Bush League” play and umpire Mike Muchlinski should have awarded Tabata a ball instead of allowing him 1st base because he got in the way of the ball.

“It was a real Bush League thing in a circumstance. If it’s a one- or two-to-nothing game, I understand, you’re trying to win. It’s 6 nothing, 2 outs in the 9th, nobody on, we know what’s going on here. He should not have. Mr. Muchlinski should have said, ‘No, you stay right here, young man.'”

Scherzer was still able to walk away with a no-hitter and a 6-0 victory over the Pirates.
