Tuesday on Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show,” political analyst and author Dick Morris said President Barack Obama’s Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) secret trade deal, which it’s passage is being helped through the U.S. Senate by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) and the Republicans, is really about the “surrender of sovereignty” because the other countries who sign the deal can bypass our legislature by suing in international trade courts.
Morris said, “This has nothing to do with trade. NAFTA accomplished three fourths of what this treaty would do in trade. What it is about is a surrender of sovereignty. Does a state legislature in some liberal state ban genetically modified foods or require it to be labeled? Under this deal they could sue and stop that. Do the conservatives want to reject a climate change treaty under this treaty? Environmental provisions the other signatories could sue and make the United States tow the line.”
He added, “These Republicans are paid by the special interests who are their campaign funders who want to be able to sue under this treaty. They want to be able to bypass the Congress and the legislature. Sometimes on the left, sometimes on the right, but above all in their own profit and their own self interests. And this is the dividing line between the big business Republicans like McConnell, and the grassroots, of the people Republicans that are opposing this treaty.”
