Gerard Biard, Editor-in-Chief of Charlie Hebdo, argued that blasphemy is necessary and misunderstood on Monday’s “The Last Word” on MSNBC.
Biard said, “people don’t know what — what blasphemy is. I think that blasphemy can be a good thing. Because to blaspheme is a way to counter, to defy, to — to have debate with the power. So, it’s — blasphemy, it’s democracy. It’s a way to — to make fun, or to — to argue with — with the supreme power. The supreme power can be a god, can be a president, can be a king. So, yes, democracy needs blasphemy.”
