Garland, TX Mayor Douglas Athas stated “we all swear to uphold the constitution, free speech, free assembly” in an interview with CNN during the network’s coverage of a shooting at the in the city Mohammed Art Exhibit and Contest.
Athas was asked if there was “concern” about hosting the event, he stated, “they do rent it [the building the event was held in] to the public. So, events are held there all the time. This group wanted to rent it. There was concern, which is why we had heightened security in the area, but we all swear to uphold the constitution, free speech, free assembly, and this in case perhaps free religion, and so they were welcome to use it — use the building.”
