NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” decided to give up on competing with the pay-per-view broadcast of the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight by “pirating” the broadcast of the fight.
The sketch begins with NBC recapping its sports line-up of hockey, the Kentucky Derby, and golf, which they dubbed the “whitest day in the history professional sports.” NBC then admits that there is no way they can compete with the fight, but luckily, they know someone who can pirate the broadcast.
They then cut to the “broadcast” of the fight, where they explain their casting decisions by saying distortions in the pirated signal might cause Mayweather to seem taller than he is and Pacquiao may appear to be played by a white woman.
They also introduce the unorthodox rules of the fight, which include the referee repeating numbers and adding additional, made-up numbers in the event he has to count either of the boxers down in order to draw the fight out. Another rule is that Justin Bieber, who is ringside, will come into the ring and dance to humiliate any boxer who is knocked down, Bieber, when asked if he is ready says he was “born ready” and also “born premature.”
The two actors playing Mayweather and Pacquaio then very poorly act out a fight, which NBC tries convince the viewers is really a battle of “graceful warriors”
The sketch concludes by breaking the fourth wall as two of the actors leave to go watch the actual fight. And Pacquiao is declared the winner because the actress playing him is the only one to not leave, which NBC says eliminates any reason to change the channel.
