Andrea Mitchell Refers to Mexican-American Joaquín Castro as Having ‘Cuban-American Background’

On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” host Andrea Mitchell mistakenly identified her guest Rep. Joaquín Castro (D-TX) as having a “Cuban-American background” in her setup for a question about U.S.-Cuba relations.

“[W]e’ll talk politics but I want to talk about the reason we’re here, this Latin American summit, the first one attended by Cuba because of the change in U.S. policy,” Mitchell said. “You have a Cuban-American background.”

Castro, however, is Mexican-American.

“I’m Mexican-American, same last name as –” Castro replied.

“Mexican-American, but you understand the real divisions in the Hispanic and Latino communities about this,” Mitchell responded.

“Absolutely. You know, and for 50 years, I think in many ways out of deference to the Cuban-American community, much of it in Florida, the United States kept a long distance from Cuba,” Castro continued.
