On Sunday’s “Meet the Press” on NBC, new Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred sat down with host Chuck Todd and was asked about the diversification of Major League Baseball and how the number of African Americans is dwindling in the league.
Manfred stated that Major League Baseball is opening up urban youth academies, hoping to attract more African-Americans back to baseball.
“Baseball Tomorrow has built $10 million worth of youth fields in the last decade. Maybe most important, our clubs and partnership with baseball have opened a number of urban youth academies. It’s a fantastic program. An after school program that includes baseball, educational support, nutrition support and through those sorts of programs we hope to attract more people, more African Americans back to the game.
