Washington Post National Political Correspondent Karen Tumulty pointed out that “most of the energy in what they call the anti-vaxer movement in recent years has actually come from upscale, liberal parts of the country” on Tuesday’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports” on MSNBC.
“Most of the energy in what they call the anti-vaxer movement in recent years has actually come from upscale, liberal parts of the country, the Whole Foods belt if you [will]. And so, yes, you did see in the 2008 campaign, not only then-Senators Obama and Clinton, but also John McCain, sort of indulging the theories that somehow there was a link between the rising incidence of autism and something in the vaccines” she stated.
Tumulty added that while the 2008 campaign took place before Andrew Wakefield’s paper alleging a link between vaccines and autism was thoroughly discredited back in 2010, “the enormous weight of medical evidence, even then, was that there was no link.” Tumulty concluded by pointing out that Hillary Clinton did “spearhead” a vaccine program back in 1993 and said Clinton “was a very strong proponent of vaccines for children.”
