Target’s ads and in-store displays featuring the movie “Annie” are in the center of a controversy because some feature a white model as Annie instead of an black model similar to Quvenzhané Wallis, the actress who plays the character in the 2014 remake released for the holidays.
The pushback stems from a Change.org petition started by L’Sean Rinique Shelton of Bear, DE calling on Target to remove the Annie ads and issue Wallis an apology.
“[My daughter] saw the ad and said to me, ‘That’s not what Annie looks like. How come the new black Annie isn’t good enough? Does that mean I’m not good enough?’” Rinique Shelton said in a report from Yahoo News.
