On Monday’s “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel, long-time New Yorker Donald Trump sounded off on last Saturday’s incident involving the killing of two New York City police officers, which has exposed a divide in the city.
First, Trump took aim at Al Sharpton, who he accused of not believing what he says and labeled him “a con man.”
“I live in New York and I know Al Sharpton very well,” Trump said. “I dealt with him many times over the years. And he is a guy who I don’t believe really believes what he’s saying. Some people would call him a con man. You look at the Tawana Brawley case which was a disaster and a disgrace. It was somebody else other than Sharpton that would have been jail time for those people. And he’s gotten away with a lot of murder. He probably makes a decent living. He doesn’t pay taxes. If you didn’t pay your taxes, you’d be going to jail for a long time for some reason he’s out on the street preaching … He doesn’t believe what he’s saying.”
Trump noted the apparent racial divide within New York City.
“I’ve never seen the city like this,” Trump continued. “It’s torn, it’s divided. In the age of Obama where all of this stuff should have been perfect and the best ever, it’s among the worst I’ve ever seen and that’s been a long time. I’ve been watching it for a long time. I’ve lived in New York for a long time. I’ve never seen such race divide as i see right now. Incredible.”
As for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, Trump told co-hosts Brian Kilmeade, Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Steve Doocy that de Blasio needed to change his rhetoric about the New York City Police Department.
“Well, he’s going to have to change his attitude,” Trump added. “I mean, his attitude now is incredible. I listened to what Rudy [Giuliani] was saying. It true about closing streets you and see the level of hatred, ‘kill the cops.’ These cops are tremendous people. I know so many police. They work hard and have a very, very dangerous job. Of course there is always some bad apples, no matter where you go or what you do. But the cops are tremendous people — the police. And you’re going to have a backlash if something is not done about people like Sharpton. The mayor has got to act quickly or he’s going to lose control of the city.”
