McCain: Next DefSec Should Realize He Won’t Have Any Influence

On Tuesday’s broadcast of “America’s Newsroom” on the Fox News Channel, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) downplayed the role the next secretary of defense would have in the Obama administration.

McCain mentioned former Sen. Joe Lieberman (D-DE) as a good possible pick, but said it was seen as being Ashton Carter as the most likely choice.

“All the decisions now are being made within a tight circle in the White House. None of whom have any idea about national security by the way. They would not select him because they don’t want any independence,” he said.

“I just hope he realizes that if he takes the job, he will not have influence, just as his three predecessors didn’t on national security policy,” McCain added.
