Maher: Americans Hate the Word 'Liberal'

On Charlie Rose’s Tuesday show, HBO “Real Time” host Bill Maher lamented the connotations that come with the word “liberal” while explaining his own politics to Rose.

Maher said he often upsets liberals, but described his as progressive and having a touch of libertarian

“People, first of all – we were just talking about this before we went on – don’t know what they are,” Maher said. “They hate the word ‘liberal’ around the country.  They don’t know that they are more progressive than they think they are.”

Maher went on to argue that label has been what has given President Barack Obama trouble over the years, noting that the public is probably more in line with Obama on policy than they realize.
