Thursday on MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports,” Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-IL) said “anti-immigrant” and “xenophobic” House GOP members blocking immigration reform have forced President Barack Obama to address the issue by giving amnesty with an executive order to an estimated 6 million illegal immigrant currently living in the United States.
Gutiérrez said, “There are a dozen very anti-immigrant, xenophobic members of the House of Representatives in the Republican majority that just have a stranglehold. We cannot have that. I think what the president is going to say is, look, there are people that have established themselves. I want a legislative solution. You’re not giving me one.”
“I think president will pick a date. He’s going to say, let me see, of the 11 million undocumented workers in the United States, if you’ve been here ten years and you’ve established roots in your community, you have children, you’ve been married, you’ve been working, very important, you can go through a vigorous background check. Provide your fingerprints, register with the government and show us you’ve been working and behaving, I’m going to give you a two-year permit to work in this country and free you,” he added.
Gutiérrez added if the president uses the “been here 10 years” standard over 6 million illegal immigrants would qualify for the executive action amnesty.
