Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales argued that Congress should focus on passing an immigration bill that includes a pathway to legal status despite concerns that the Obama administration will not enforce the law.
On Tuesday’s “Laura Ingraham Show,” he said that “certain undocumented immigrants that are in this country now that can be productive to our economy” who should be allowed to remain in the country, although he criticized the Obama administration for sending the message that those who come to the country illegally can stay earlier in the interview.
When he was asked why he had confidence that President Barack Obama would not ignore the provisions of any immigration reform plan and grant blanket amnesty, Gonzales said that we haven’t been able to “test” how such a bill would be reformed.
“Congress needs to pass a bill and present it to the president, and then we can have this kind of discussion … the fact that the president doesn’t do his job, hasn’t done his job, doesn’t excuse Congress from doing theirs,” he said.
