Thursday in Iowa while campaigning for incumbent Gov. Terry Branstad, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie blasted the Obama administration for the their “awful” response to the humanitarian crisis of unaccompanied children flooding across the U.S. Mexico border.
The republican governor said, “I have great empathy for that situation, but frankly the administration has done an awful job in securing our border, and they need to do that.” Christie added immigration reform “deserves a much deeper and thoughtful conversation.”
He said while he doesn’t want to “participate in encouraging this,” the governor added, “we are an empathetic people in this country and we don’t like seeing people suffer.”
Since last fall 57,000 unaccompanied minors from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, have been caught illegally entering the United States. Last Week Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson predicted as many as 90,000 unaccompanied minors could cross before the end of this fiscal year.
