Tuesday on MSNBC’s “NOW w/Alex Wagner,” Assistant to the President and Director of the Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Muñoz was grilled by host Alex Wagner over President Barack Obama’s “refusal” to visit the border and witness the humanitarian crisis first hand when he is in Texas for a fundraiser later this week.
“One thing seems to be bipartisan accord on, if I can say that in these days, a lot of folks on both sides of the aisle think it is imperative that the president visit the border. It is not just Republicans,” she said. “[W]hy is the president not visiting the border?”
Muñoz answered by saying Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has been to the border five times in the last month, which prompted Wagner to interrupt.
“Can I just interrupt you Cecilia, we’re well aware of the cabinet members who visited,” Wagner replied. “The White House weeks ago designated this as a humanitarian crisis, why is he not going to the border to look at this one?”
Muñoz continued by offering other administration actions as examples of the president’s involvement, but Wagner rebutted, “So do you expect there will be no blowback that the president will be in the state of Texas at the fundraiser meeting with a governor to talk about the situation and refuses to go to the actual place where the crisis is happening?”
