Thursday at the Democratic leaders press conference, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) argued that House Republicans should stop being afraid of the extreme right and pass immigration reform because the Tea Party’s influence and power in on the decline.
According to Schumer, that was evidenced by this spring’s primaries where a Tea Party candidate was only victorious once against establishment Republicans, when David Brat (R-VA) beat the House Majority leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) in the Virginia primary.
The New York lawmaker accused the House Republicans are afraid of “a small sliver of the minority of America,” which he said were the Tea Party and Rush Limbaugh.
He also argued, “The Tea Party while still very powerful has peaked” and that the “fear is greater then the reality.”
