On his Tuesday broadcast, Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart took aim at what appears to be a back-and-forth between former Hillary Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden, two of the prospective candidates for the 2016 Democratic nomination for president, over what he deemed to be a “poor-off” in which the two publicly espoused their humble origins.
“Do you remember a time when Barack Obama was but a young naïve presidential candidate and he said working class voters in the Midwest were clinging to their guns and religion? Now, the American people punished him by electing him to two terms as president of the United States because that ain’t fun. Well the Democratic front-runners for 2016 aren’t going to make that mistake.”
Stewart played clips of the two that seemed to be calculated efforts to bolster their public images in that regard, but then in the end questioned why the two are having a race to the bottom of the income ladder, which he suggested would be unbelievable.
“Hold on – ‘I’m homeless. I happen to stay in mansion belonging to my lovely bride. Kind of like the king of England.’ What’s with the poverty Tourette’s? Why do these two think we need a hobo for president? Own what you have – it’s fine. More importantly, why do they think we’ll believe them? I mean, both of you have both have your faces on book covers — books written by them about them. That usually means you’re doing pretty good.”
But when Stewart saw the report Biden’s book “Promises to Keep” only earned $201 in royalties last year, Stewart said, “On second thought, I’m not sure how this guy affords a bucket to [expletive] in.”
