On Wednesday’s “Hannity” on the Fox News Channel, U.S. Senate hopefuls Joe Carr (R-TN) and Chris McDaniel (R-MS) discussed their upcoming electoral contests for their party’s nomination, which has taken center stage on the heels of Dave Brat’s upset defeat of House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) in Tuesday’s GOP primary in Virginia’s 7th congressional district.
McDaniel narrowly eked out a win over incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), but was forced into a June 24 runoff against Cochran after coming up short in securing 50 percent of the vote. On Brat’s win, he called it a trend in the public’s displeasure with Washington, D.C.
“We had an extraordinary night the other night and the reason for that is simple — the people of this country are finally waking up,” McDaniel said. “They that know Washington D.C. is broken. They know we are heading in the right direction. There is one way to fix it. We can send new people to Washington to represent us. And conservatives are finally ready to fight and that’s exactly what we have to do. We have to learn to be bold and courageous and strong and if we do that, we can turn this country around.”
Carr, whose contest is slated for August 7, criticized his opponent, Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) by pointing out where he had parted ways with conservative on some hot-button issues in recent years.
“Absolutely we doubt his conservatism,” Carr said. “Look at his record. He voted for the $600-billion fiscal cliff tax-hike bill. He voted for cloture to fund ObamaCare. He voted for cloture to take away veterans benefits. He voted ‘yes’ on amnesty for illegal aliens. He joins Obama on the war on coal. Issue after issue after issue he not only strays away from conservative principles, in many respects he strays away from Republican principles. And that’s all the Tea Party is. The Tea Party and grass roots wants to implement those principles that are found in Republicanism.”
