Boxer Proposes Bill to Allow Families to Confiscate Guns of 'Unstable' People

Monday on the floor of the U.S. Senate, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA) introduced the Pause for Safety Act, legislation aimed at “violence prevention.” The legislation would allow family members to take guns away from an “unstable” person and is a response to last months mass murder in the student community of Isla vista at UC-Santa Barbara. Family members had expressed concern about Elliot Rodger’s to local police but after interviewing the 22-year old they closed the case.

Boxer’s bill would allow family members who are worried about the mental health of a loved one to ask a court for a “gun-violence prevention” warrant which would prevent that person from buying a new gun and allow the authorities to confiscate any existing guns.

Boxer said of her legislation: “We have a function here not to allow someone who is unstable or violent to get a weapon”
