On her Thursday radio show, former Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS), a former chairman of the Republican National Committee, explained why he sees long-time incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) as a better candidate for reelection than his challenger for the Republican nomination, Mississippi State Sen. Chris McDaniel, most of which was based on Cochran’s actions in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
“Well first of all, Sen. Cochran – when Mississippi was in the worst hour of need in the last hundred and something years, after Katrina, Trent Lott, Chip Pickering – our delegation was great,” Barbour said. “But Thad Cochran was the giant who saved our state because federal disaster assistance laws that existed at the time – one by the way that Sen. Chris McDaniel criticizes because of all the waste in Louisiana – well those laws were not designed for the mega-disasters.”
“Sen. Cochran got a package of new laws passed that took into account the mega-disaster that hit the Gulf Coast,” he continued. “He led that. Nobody else could have.”
Barbour took a parting shot at McDaniel, suggesting that Cochran would be more capable as a senator than McDaniel in this upcoming Congress.
“I am very strong on Sen. Cochran because I know he can do more for us in the first six weeks of his term than his opponent can do in the whole six years,” Barbour added.
