Hollywood comedian Chelsea Handler followed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and former President Barack Obama in campaigning for Democrat Mike Levin, who is running against Republican Diane Harkey to replace retiring Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) in California’s 49th congressional district.
Handler posted a photo Sunday showing Levin supporters along with the message, “Today I had the pleasure of canvassing for @MikeLevinCA in CA’s 49th. We can flip the 49th on November 6th. Thank you to all of today’s volunteers. #NovemberIsComing.”
Left-wing activist Handler has repeatedly attacked President Trump. In January, she said he had “sh*t for brains”; in July, she urged Twitter to ban him. She has also attacked members of his administration, calling Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders a “harlot” wearing “summer whore lipstick.” The former Netflix host also called for people to “take to the streets” in August to support “abortion rights” with NARAL.
Issa narrowly won re-election in the 49th district in 2016 with a less than one percent margin. Obama supported Issa’s challenger in 2016, appearing at a fundraiser for that Democrat’s campaign. Issa announced later that he would not seek re-election in 2018.
Obama campaigned this month for Levin and six other Democrats running in California congressional districts that are held by Republicans, but which were won by Hillary Clinton in 2016.
Minority Leader Pelosi campaigned for Levin in late August. Levin has called Pelosi “one of [his] political heroes.” Some of his biggest donors come Pelosi’s home turf in the San Francisco Bay Area. Pelosi has made moves to return as Speaker of the House should Democrats prevail and return to the majority after the November midterm elections.
Campaigning in the 49th district appeared to be in full force over the weekend, with President Trump’s son Eric Trump and several Trump campaign leaders rallying support for Harkey on Saturday at her Vista campaign headquarters.
