Kamala Harris for President 2020: ‘I’m Not Ruling it Out’

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) told MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt on Sunday that she is not ruling out a 2020 run for president.

In an interview at the U.S.-Mexico border, where Harris led a demonstration against President Donald Trump’s policies and what she called “human rights abuse,” Harris — widely considered a leading contender already — suggested that she would consider challenging Trump directly at the ballot box:

Hunt: Your colleague, [New Jersey Democratic Senator] Cory Booker, was asked about his presidential ambitions recently, and he said after 2018 he’ll give it a look. Are you in that same place?

Harris: I’m focused on 2018.

Hunt: Will you give it a look after 2018?

Harris: I’m looking all around. I’m looking at these fabulous people out here. Hi, guys.

Hunt: You’re not looking at the White House?

Harris: Right now, i’m focused on this. I’mm focused on a lot of other things as a higher priority.

Hunt: But you’re not ruling it out?

Harris; I mean, you know, I don’t know. I don’t know. I’m not ruling it out, no.

Also on Sunday, Harris was named by former president Barack Obama as one of five Democrats who represent the party’s future, in an interview that ran in New York magazine

As he was leaving office, he publicly identified a handful of rising liberals who he believes represent the party’s future, including Kaine, Bennet, California senator Kamala Harris, South Bend mayor Pete Buttigieg, and former Missouri secretary of state Jason Kander. He’s talked to all of them but Harris in recent months, and has also met with others hoping to lead the party in the near term.

Harris has shown great fundraising prowess — both for herself and for other candidates — and is one of her party’s few national stars, despite being a junior senator in her second year in Washington.
