On Sunday, Rep. Ted Lieu (D-CA) endorsed California State Treasurer John Chiang for governor of California, as the duo campaigned together throughout Southern California and hosted a Facebook Live event.
But first, Lieu took the opportunity to attack President Donald Trump.
Chiang is among the top three Democrats in the 2018 governor’s race, but is lagging in the polls behind Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. He is, however, second in fundraising.
“John has a strong record of standing up for the common person, taking a different road and getting things done,” Lieu said in statement, according to the Los Angles Times. “We need a candidate we can trust, one we can relate to, one with the courage to hold others accountable. The future is uncertain but we have an opportunity to leave them in capable hands. We need new leadership that doesn’t add to the rhetoric but instead is resistant to policies that take us backwards in the progress we have made in this country.”
Chiang, who launched his underdog campaign in May, began by taking aim at Newsom, saying, “I’m always the underdog. I wasn’t born into a family with wealth or big connections, and that is what people respect.”
Lieu, who has been vehemently opposed to President Trump, has built his own profile among voters in the deep-blue coastal districts of California.
At the start of his Facebook Live endorsement of Chiang, Lieu began by calling on “all Americans to condemn the hated that came forth” on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, before waging an attack on President Donald Trump. “I am very disappointed that the president has not condemned white supremacists. He has said there’s many sides to this. No, Mr. President. There’s only two sides,” Lieu said. “There’s hatred and bigotry and white supremacists, and there’s everybody else.” (Lieu did not mention the violent Antifa, which was also present at Saturday’s rally.)
