On March 6, the San Francisco Sentinel ran a column by MSNBC’s Steve Benin, labeling the NRA’s tweet on the hypocrisy behind Gabby Giffords’ gun control push a “bad idea.”
On March 5, the NRA tweeted a Breitbart News (BN) story highlighting the fact that Jared Loughner—the man who attacked Gabby Giffords in January 2011—went through a background check to acquire his gun.
The BN story showed that Jared and Amanda Miller (Las Vegas), Elliot Rodger (Santa Barbara), Ivan Lopez (Fort Hood 2014), Darion Marcus Aguilar (Maryland mall), Karl Halverson Pierson (Arapahoe High School), Paul Ciancia (LAX), and numerous other high profile firearm-related attackers acquired their guns through background checks, as well.
According to Benin, these things—specifically the fact that Giffords’ attacker got his gun by submitting to a background check—is a “rhetorical shot at Giffords’ directly.”
He then noted that the GOP congressional majority has “zero” chance to pass gun control. He asserted that in exposing the hypocrisy behind Giffords’ gun control push, the NRA is “taking a cheap shot at a foe whom they’ve already defeated.”
