Actor-turned activist George Clooney took center stage at the 72nd annual Golden Globe awards in Beverly Hills on Sunday, where he received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. After giving a heartfelt speech expressing his love for his new wife–Lebanese-born, English human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin–Clooney said a few words offstage to the press corps about current events.
Sporting a “Je Suis Charlie” pin on his lapel, Clooney told the media that they should be mindful not to overreact to the terrorist attacks carried out in France this past week. He also attempted to distance the Muslim faith from the events that took place.
“There’s a lot of anti-Muslim fervor in parts of Europe and we have to make sure that doesn’t get grouped into this horrible act of violence,” he said, according to Variety.
In September of last year, Clooney’s new father-in-law and Lebanese-born Hamzi Alamuddin said the marriage between his Clooney and his daughter Amal was “very good news” for the Middle East.
Clooney is thought to be considering entering politics, and Sen. Barbara Boxer’s (D-CA) 2016 retirement could provide him with a start.
