Mexican health officials say the number of confirmed cases of novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) rose from 1,900 to 1,215 in one day.
During a streamed news conference, Mexican health officials revealed a new total of 1,215 cases, 29 fatalities, and 6,282 under testing.
Mexico City, greater Mexico State, and the state of Jalisco serve as the top three hotspots for infection.
The new figures come one day after Mexico City declared a national health emergency and ordered non-essential businesses and organizations closed. The declaration follows weeks of President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s encouragement to publicly mingle.
Lopez Obrador continues to make open appearances. Last Sunday, he drew harsh criticism for traveling to Sinaloa for a meeting with Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman‘s mother. A video of the event went viral showing the moment when AMLO mentions a letter he received from El Chapo’s mother. In the letter, the woman asked for help in getting a visa so she can visit her son serving a life-term in the United States.
