Mexican health officials say they registered more than 100 cases of the novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) over the weekend, bringing the national total to 316.
The new statistics were released during a nightly news conference hosted by the Health Secretariat. The announcements revealed that in addition to the 316 confirmed cases, officials are looking at 793 new tests. So far, authorities have ruled out a national total 1,667. There are only two confirmed deaths.
The new cases show a sharp rise from 203 on Friday night. Health officials did not comment on the expected figures in the coming days.
Even though dozens of cases are community-based, health officials chose to classify them as travel-related claiming that they are first-generation transmissions.
The federal government is being widely criticized by news outlets for not taking any domestic action to curb the potential spread. While individual states and cities have shut down beaches, schools, and mass gatherings, Mexico City is sticking to recommendations and public awareness campaigns urging citizens to keep a “safe distance” from each other. In recent days, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador claimed he is protected from all evils by his faith and various amulets. Lopez Obrador has been caught on camera several times ignoring the recommendations from his own health officials about social distancing.
