CIUDAD VICTORIA, Tamaulipas – A recent shooting that killed three amateur soccer players and injured a fourth is apparently linked to the growing influence of local organized crime within clubs. The deaths come days after gunmen murdered another player.

The murders took place on Wednesday night when four members of the amateur team Los Diablos were leaving a sports complex in Ciudad Victoria. The men had just finished playing Estudiantil and were riding in a small red Chevrolet.

The victims were driving away when gunmen cut them off and forced two men out of their vehicle before firing upon all in the party. Three of the victims died at the scene while 19-year-old Juan Enrique Javier Ruiz Ibarra survived and is listed as being in serious condition. The three murder victims were identified as Gerardo Bautista Sánchez, Rolando López Velázquez, and Luis Adrian Esqueda Camacho. All four were apparently shot with .40 caliber weapons.

Tamaulipas authorities are tight-lipped about the case, however, several local residents say the opposing team is sponsored by a local drug lord.

The murders followed soon after gunmen killed another local player known as “La Bola” Carlos Alberto Castillo Gonzalez–the star player for Dimada FC. Though La Bola was known for his soccer skills, his team is allegedly financed by another local drug lord.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “Francisco Morales” from Tamaulipas.
