U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) said the Democrat’s impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump is a “desperate act” during an interview with KFYO’s Chad Hasty.

“There’s a lot of reasons to be skeptical about here as they try to impeach a president — would be for the fourth time in American history — 13 months before the election,” Senator Cornyn told Hasty. “It strikes me as a desperate act.”

“It seems to me to be pretty thin stuff, pretty thin gruel,” the senior senator from Texas explained. “This is an extraordinary process, and it strikes me that this is, right now, it seems like a continuation of the effort by those who never have accepted the fact that President Trump won the election in the first place.”

Hasty asked Cornyn about the issue of the whistleblower’s hearsay information. “That strikes me as pretty bizarre,” Cornyn responded. “How can you judge the credibility of something that somebody reports that is something they heard about from others and doesn’t have first-hand knowledge. It’s a very strange posture to be sure.”

Cornyn explained that impeachment is a political process as opposed to a criminal proceeding, like the Muller investigation.

Hasty asked Cornyn how he thought this impeachment circus would impact the 2020 presidential election.

“It’s going to be a high-risk gamble by Nancy Pelosi to start this just 13 months before the election,” the senator responded. “Why they didn’t just decide to try and beat the president in 2020, but apparently they’re losing confidence they can actually do that.”

Cornyn said he believes the campaign of former Vice President Joe Biden is going to fade and that Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) will win the Democrat Party’s nomination.

“This (the impeachment) could well boomerang on them,” Coryn explained, “and it may just look to the American people like a continuation of this resistance to a Trump presidency even after he was duly elected in 2016. And if the Democrats put up somebody like Elizabeth Warren, a truly radical candidate, I think that bodes well for the president’s re-election. ”
