MATAMOROS, Tamaulipas — Teams of Gulf Cartel gunmen carried out a brazen rescue operation in an attempt to free one of their lieutenants who was being held in a Mexican border city courthouse. The large-scale gun battle killed one police officer and injured two others.

The failed rescue operation took place Friday night at a courthouse in Matamoros, Mexico. Jorge Neftali “El Jumex” Medellin Sanchez, who also went by the name Emiliano Gonzalez Beas, was expected to face a judge for multiple criminal cases he has pending. Shortly after 9:30 p.m., teams of gunmen tried to rescue El Jumex. The attack set off a fierce gun battle where one officer with Fuerza Tamaulipas died and two others were injured. In response to the shootout, state police forces called for backup from the Mexican Navy, the Mexican Army, and federal police forces.

According to information provided to Breitbart Texas by Mexican law enforcement sources, the failed rescue operation began outside the courthouse near the intersection of Gonzalez and 21st Street. From there, a series of rolling gunbattles and blockades took place throughout the city including some of the main highways and popular shopping areas.

The man known as El Jumex has been identified as a cartel lieutenant who had been operating in Ciudad Victoria. He is linked to numerous kidnappings and extortions for the Gulf Cartel.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.A. Espinoza” from Tamaulipas.
