A Central Texas middle school coach stands accused of misconduct with one of his former students. Their so-called “playful” and “flirty” relationship allegedly turned sexual over the past two years.
Rodney Guerrero, 39, the Goodnight Middle School boys’ athletic coordinator, was arrested and booked into the Hays County Jail on Saturday. He was charged with improper relationship between an educator and a student. Online jail records showed Guerrero remained in custody Monday on $15,000 bail.
The alleged female victim in this case told San Marcos police she met Guerrero when she was in sixth grade at the middle school but their relationship did not become inappropriate until she entered her freshman year in high school, according to court documents.
The victim recalled that, in August 2016, she talked with Guerrero. She said he saw photographs on her cell phone where she wore a two piece swim suit. Purportedly, Guerrero asked the girl about taking more pictures of herself to show him. Court documents stated she took a selfie in a blue thong and no shirt or bra and sent it to Guerrero, according to KXAN. The two later hooked up.
In the affidavit, the victim described the nature of their relationship largely as “playful” and “flirty,” KTXS reported. The girl said she and Guerrero would meet during school games where she helped him at the concession stand as well as during teacher workdays. The victim also told detectives that, at least, on one occasion, she met Guerrero in a locker room where he got her to perform sex acts.
The sexual relationship continued until June 2018 when the victim said she broke up with Guerrero. The teen told police “she did not think they should do this anymore.” Investigators indicated they had phone recordings of the breakup in which Guerrero was heard asking for more salacious photos and videos from the victim, according to the affidavit.
The Goodnight Middle School website shows Guerrero has taught for 14 years in such subjects as health, physical education (P.E.), and athletics. During 12 of those years, he has worked as an athletic coordinator. According to the Texas State Board for Educator Certification, Guerrero holds valid teaching credentials. Also, he is certificated as a generalist for grades four through eight.
In a written statement, the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District said they “immediately” placed Guerrero on administrative leave and cooperated with local law enforcement when, earlier this summer, they learned about these “allegations of possible misconduct by a Goodnight employee.”
“While the district was cooperating with law enforcement officials during the investigation, notification to the community was based on when the police would allow the district to share any information,” wrote school district officials. They said a “letter to the campus community will be sent home informing them of the situation that has taken place.”
It is not known if there are any other victims.
In Texas, the offense of improper relationship between an educator and a student is a second degree felony. If convicted, Guerrero could face up to 20 years in prison and a fine as high as $10,000.
