Harris County officials say they are investigating an apparent hate speech incident after a swastika and the message “whites only” were found spray-painted on the athletic track of a Texas junior high school.
On Sunday, a young woman posted a photo of the offensive graffiti on Twitter after her mother discovered it during her morning walk, according to KTRK. The swastika and “whites only” message were scrawled on the far end of the running track at Willow Wood Junior High in the Tomball Independent School District. Later, another spray painted swastika was located on concrete hardscaping near the school in a different location. Reportedly, all of the abhorrent images have been removed by the Tomball ISD maintenance department.
The parent who observed the graffiti is black. She contacted police. She also spoke to local media, although she asked not to be identified. “I’m scared and hurt,” she told KTRK. “But I’m taking action, and I’m talking about it. I want people to be aware of what’s going on in our community.”
The daughter, who then tweeted a photo of the heinous Nazi symbol and racist message, said her post was not meant “for status” purposes but to inform people.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office tweeted they opened an investigation into the “graffiti incident in which hate speech was spray painted” at the junior high school. Deputies do not know yet who is responsible for this purported hate speech. They have sought the public’s help, asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston.
On Monday, the school district released a statement about the situation. It read: “Tomball ISD was made aware of the inappropriate use of graffiti painted on the Willow Wood Junior high track this morning. We have handed this investigation over to Harris County officials at this time.”
